Review from Chapter Three, County Clare, Shannon Region.

"Bunratty Lodge is a lovely Wedgwood blue neo-Georgian house conveniently located just a few minutes from Shannon Airport and Bunratty Castle. Set in the quiet countryside, Bunratty Lodge has every convenience and luxury a traveller could dream of.

Visitors are welcomed into the flawless ambiance of Bunratty Lodge by bright and cheerful Mary Browne. The foyer area is specially set to accommodate guests who are in the midst of planning their trips. A large table surrounded by chairs provides just the place spreading out maps while comfortable lounge chairs, assorted brochures, and well-stocked bookcases provide information for the arm-chair traveler.

A beautifully decorated sitting room is done in blue with elegant draperies, a marble fireplace, piano and comfortable furniture. It is a showplace adorned with antiques and collectibles including silver, china, crystal and an extensive display of blue Wedgwood jasperware.

The spacious, well-appointed rooms are plushly carpeted and have firm beds with fluffy comforters. Each is individually decorated with pretty wallpaper, coordinated color schemes and attractive accessories. Some have sitting areas and one has a romantic canopy bed.

Tea and coffee facilities are provided in each room along with satellite TV. Large open-concept closets along with well-placed reading lights and electrical outlets reflect the well thought out design. Those who are sensitive to cold weather will find that the generous heating units (which are individually controlled) make Bunratty Lodge one of the warmest B&Bs in Ireland.

Large en suite bathrooms contain big tiled showers, heated towel racks with abundant towels and hair dryers. Mary Browne serves her award winning breakfast in the bright, comfortable breakfast room overlooking a courtyard which in summer blooms with roses and includes a flower-filled wheelbarrow. The delicious meal is cooked to order and includes fruit juice, cereal or porridge, tea or brewed coffee, eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, Irish soda bread and potato cakes. Those preferring something lighter may choose French toast of fruit, yogurt and cheese.

Those who want to stay in a modern B&B that has all the charm and ambiance of a small, intimate country inn will find Bunratty Lodge to be pur perfection."

The bedrooms are pink and grey, green and pink, with a myriad of flowered designs and all with thick fluffy quilts. All the spacious bedrooms have color TVs and large tiled baths with towel heaters. Besides the full Irish Breakfast, your gracious hostess, Mary browne, serves a choice of eggs and potatoes, fruit, yogurt and cheeses, and an option of French toast. She has received the Galtee county award for her breakfasts. the dining room is well lighted with large windows to the garden, and a choice of a large table or separates. Medieval banquets at the nearby Bunratty Castle can be arranged. along with other advice on touring this area. Dan McQuillan, Ireland Guide: Be a Traveler - Not a Tourist!

"This impressive B&B is the winner of a number of awards in the B&B industry, and is recognised as one of the best around. Mrs. Mary Browne is your hostess, and her two decades of expertise in the industry is evident. The home is a newer, neo-Georgian style home, built specifically to be used as a B&B. Each of the six rooms is ensuite, and is large and nicely decorated with canopy beds, new carpeting, and central heating. Each room has a television, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and hairdryers. the bathrooms are modern and complemented by heated towel racks.

If you've had a long day of driving or sightseeing, or just need to burn a few minutes before attending the medieval banquet at Bunratty Castle, you'll enjoy their luxurious reading room filled with antiques and interesting collectibles. Breakfast is a treat, as it would be for a B&B that has won the prestigious Galtee Irish Breakfast Award.

If you are fortunate your stay may coincide with the stay of actress Maureen O'Hara. Ms. O'Hara has stayed at Bunratty Lodge regularly through the years. Her Irish names and starring role in The Quiet Man a few years ago make her a favourite of the Irish folk. Bunratty lodge is about one and a half miles from Bunratty Castle and five miles from the Shannon Airport. It is open March through November."
